The Japan Under-20 team finished third in the Qatar International Friendly Tournament after beating hosts Qatar 3-1 in the third-place playoff on Tuesday at Qatar SC Stadium in Doha.

Midfielder Hiroki Kawano put Japan ahead in the 16th minute, Koken Kato added a goal in the 52nd minute and forward Kento Shiratani made it 3-0 in the 59th minute.
The Qataris pulled a goal back with a penalty in the 76th minute.
Japan reached the third-place playoff after losing to Uzbekistan 3-2 in the semifinals on Sunday. The young Japanese side had finished second in Group B with a 1-1-1 record behind Syria. Japan started with a 1-0 loss to Syria and drew 1-1 with UAE before beating Serbia 3-2 in the group stage.
Syria won the tournament with a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan in the final later in the day.
