Japan U-20s start East Asian Games with win
The Japan Under-20 side started the East Asian Games on a winning note on Wednesday, holding off DPR Korea 2-1 in their opening game at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground in Hong Kong.
Shohei Otsuka scored the opener in the 30th minute to put Japan 1-0 up at halftime.
However, two minutes into the second half, Kosuke Yamamoto was red-carded and Japan had to play the rest of the game with 10 men.
The Koreans equalized in the 52nd minute through Choe Chol Man, but Daisuke Suzuki headed in a free-kick in the 59th minute for the winner.
Japan will next play Macao on Monday.
