Own goals allow England to edge Japan

Japan took an early lead in Sunday's friendly international against England, but two late own-goals allowed Fabio Capello's men to steal a 2-1 victory at UPC Arena in Graz, Austria, on Sunday.

Marcus Tulio Tanaka put Japan in front in the sixth minute, but scored at the wrong end 18 minutes from time. Fellow center-back Yuji Nakazawa performed a similar move 11 minutes later, handing England their second goal.
Japan started Sunday's game well, stringing passes together and attacking the England back line.
After Yuki Abe found Yoshito Okubo in the sixth minute, the Vissel Kobe striker did enough to earn a corner on the right. Yasuhito Endo's delivery into the box was low and Tulio drove the ball home from 12 meters.
The Samurai Blue came close again two minutes later when Shinji Okazaki was set up by Tulio and hit a shot from the edge of the box.
England threatened the Japanese goal in the 19th minute when Aaron Lennon took a beautiful short pass from Wayne Rooney in the box, but Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima reacted well to smother his shot.
In the 24th minute, Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard made a powerful attempt with a free-kick from nearly 30 meters out, but Kawashima reacted well to snuff out the danger. Darren Bent and Rooney also had shots at goal before half-time.
At the break, England boss Fabio Capello made five substitutions, including Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole in midfield.
England should have drawn level in the 56th minute when Keisuke Honda raised a hand to deflect a free-kick in the penalty area. Frank Lampard directed his spot kick low to the goalkeeper's right, but Kawashima made a brilliant diving save to protect Japan's lead.
But England were enjoying the greater possession in the second half and Japan were under constant pressure. Rooney forced Kawashima into another good save with a long-range shot in the 64th minute.
Japan coach Takeshi Okada brought on Takayuki Morimoto 20 minutes into the half to revitalize Japan's attack, and two minutes later, the Catania forward forced substitute goalkeeper Joe Hart to make a fine save.
After another attempt by Rooney was foiled, England finally got on the scoresheet in the 72nd minute when Tulio stretched to head a dangerous Joe Cole cross and directed the ball into his own net.
In the 83rd minute, Japan were again out of luck when a lunge by Nakazawa only helped Ashley Cole's low center into the net, putting England 2-1 up.
Japan rallied with a good shot from Makoto Hasebe and a header from Yuki Abe that looped onto the bar, but they were unable to close the gap.
