Japan Under-20 Women’s World Cup squad announced

Japan Under-20 coach Norio Sasaki on Thursday named his squad for the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Chile from November 19 to December 7.

The 21-member squad includes Nippon TV Beleza midfielder Rumi Utsugi, who has played for the Nadeshiko Japan senior side 26 times, as well as forward Michi Goto and her Tokiwagi Gakuen High School teammate defender Saki Kumagai, who have both been capped twice and were back-up members for the Beijing Olympics.
The young Japanese women’s side will hold a training camp before heading to Santiago for their final tune-up sessions.
Japan, in the finals for the first time since 2002, will play CONCACAF champions Canada on November 20 and European champions Germany on November 23 in Santiago, before meeting African qualifiers Congo on November 27 in Chillan in Group C.
In the 16-team competition, the top two finishers from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, which will take place on November 30 and December 1. The semifinals will be held on December 4. The final and the third-place playoff will take place on December 7 in Santiago.
